Back to School in Australia 2027: A Term 1 Planner

Term 1 in 2027 starts between late January and early February, depending on your state and school. In NSW (Eastern division) students begin on Wednesday 3 February and Term 1 ends on Friday 9 April. The best planning move is to set up your term before the first day, with dates, timetable and assessments in one place.

When does Term 1 start in 2027?

The NSW Department of Education 2027 calendar lists Term 1 for Eastern division schools as Wednesday 3 February to Friday 9 April, with summer holidays from 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027. Western division schools start later, on 10 February. Queensland students return on Wednesday 27 January 2027, according to Cuemath’s 2027 holiday summary. Many independent schools start earlier or stagger year groups, so check your own school’s calendar.

What should you do before Term 1?

  1. Add the term dates and holidays. Include public holidays and the autumn break from 12 to 23 April if you are in NSW.
  2. Load your timetable. If your school gives you a photo or PDF, a tool like Schedule Scan in MyStudyLife can read it, and it is part of MSL+, which includes a 7-day trial.
  3. Find your assessment schedule. Ask for your school’s list of tasks and due dates and add every one to your planner.
  4. Plan the first three weeks. Set up your study routine before the workload peaks.

How should you plan the first term?

WeeksFocus
Before Week 1Dates, timetable, assessment calendar, study space
Weeks 1 to 3Build routines: homework slot, weekly review, one focus session a day
Weeks 4 to 7Assessment tasks start landing: work backwards from each due date
Weeks 8 to 10Review marks, catch up, rest before the holidays

How do you handle assessment tasks?

Work backwards. For each task, set a due date in your planner, then add smaller steps such as research, outline, draft and edit, each with a reminder. MyStudyLife lets you log partial progress, so an essay shows as 40% done instead of just not done. Pair it with a focus timer to protect time for the hardest steps.

What if you are in Year 11 or 12?

Marks now count towards your results, so start tracking early. Our HSC study timetable and ATAR guide explain how marks turn into a rank, and our VCE guide covers Victoria. Log each mark as it arrives so you know where you stand before the big assessments.

How can parents help?

Parents can follow the term calendar and upcoming deadlines with Family Connect, so the weekly conversation is about the plan, not the nagging. See our back-to-school checklist for parents for the practical side.
